My name is Dave Goss. I am the pastor of a brand new church in Goleta, California called Light and Life Goleta. We are in the Free Methodist Denomination. Free Methodists get their name for advocating three types of FREEness. (he he). The first is that they come from a group of “ON FIRE” Eastern New York Christian Methodist Episcopals who were fed up with the Methodist Episcopal Church for dragging their feet in condemning slavery, the system of renting pews, and spiritual apathy. They wished for “FREEDOM” for slaves, “FREEDOM” of places to sit in church (no class hierarchies), and “FREEDOM” of the Holy Spirit in worship. Sounds pretty awesome, doesn’t it?
Please pray for the baby church. We are meeting at the Fairview Theatre on Fairview Avenue in Goleta. We began weekly services on January 6th. We are striving to be a place that exemplifies, empowers, and equips parents and kids to lead synchronized lives. That is, we want to be the place where home and church synchronize. For us, there is no disconnect between what happens on Sundays and what happens the rest of the week. No more religious posing! Church is about serving a community and building amazing relationships with God and each other. And all these functions are about knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and being transformed by his Holy Spirit into new people.

I am 37 years old and beginning my vocation as a pastor. I am grateful to have some years and other vocations under my belt before beginning in the ministry as I have experienced a lot of the good, bad, and ugly in churches and among my fellow Christians already. Once upon a time I wrote that I doubted anything would take me by surprise. What a foolish-sounding thing to write! I am already amazed and surprised by things which have transpired and we are only 1 month into monthly services. Indeed, life is full of surprises, and there are more to come. By God’s Grace alone will we navigate them with love.

It is truly an amazing thing to get connected to fellow brothers and sisters in Christ across the GLOBE! God is doing great things in our church but church planting in this increasingly secular culture is still a struggle. What an amazing thing God is building. I was unaware of your blog until today. So imagine my delight at finding many months worth of wisdom and Pastor Dave words for me to peruse this afternoon. I read them all from the beginning and they are inspiring, funny, poignant, and utterly worth the hours read. Thanks for your honesty, openness and unnerving willingness to be so transparent to the flock. I’ll be keeping up from now on.
